Chapter Six Life, Times and Technology El Arteal 1945 – 1991

No expense was spared by MASA at El Arteal, the circular bath houses were a far cry from the usual pit head showers. The married workers, flats were well appointed, the residents enjoying the luxury of running water and indoor toilets. The small hospital had X-ray and operating facilities. There was a school for the workers’ children.

Pay a visit before it is too late, the roofs are caving in, the courtyards and roads are becoming increasingly choked with canes, and every year the floodwater reaches higher up the walls of the ground floor apartments. The ore processing plant was just as impressive, fully mechanised, and boasting the most up to date machinery. Ball mills, gravity washers, spiral classifiers and froth floatation tanks, El Arteal had it all.
