Chapter Eight ….. In Health
The hospital provision for the sick and injured, like so much else, depended upon co-operation and goodwill on the part of the mine owners and lessees. A recipe for disaster, and an opportunity to further abuse the workers. The appalling conditions, the poor fabric of the building, and the shortfall of funds, the outcome was inevitable.
So, if the hospital failed, there was always faith to turn to. The chapels and churches to which the men turned.
